Lefkes (Λεύκαι) Paros
Lefkes Paros (officially Lefkai) is a Mediterranean mountain village on the island of Paros at an altitude of 200 meters [1]. It is 10 km from Parikia [2]. It is the most mountainous village of Paros and has a number of churches as well as some of the last windmills that survive on the island. The last miller of Paros (Barba Artemis) who operated his mill in Lefkes died in 1996. The village got its name from the many poplars, ie the trees that used to exist in the site. The main road of the village, which leads to the center of Lefkada, is whitewashed and paved, and is called Ramnos, because in the past a tree tree dominated this road. Residents removed it over time, to have better access to the village center.
History
At the end of the 19th century, Lefkes was the center of the Municipality of Yria, which belonged to the Province of Naxos in the Prefecture of Cyclades and existed until 1912. The name of the municipality comes from Yria, one of the ancient names of Paros. The capital of the Municipality of Yria was Lefkes, which included the villages of Aggyria, or Agaria, Aliki, Aneratzia, Vounia, Kamari, Kambos, Lagada, Maltes and Marathi. The above Municipality from the implementation of the law DNZD / 1912 "On Municipalities and Communities" was transformed into a community of Whites. At that time it was developing very well. In the 1970s it experienced a great desolation due to astyphilia where many residents settled in Athens and mainly in Maroussi and Melissia looking for work. In recent years, however, due to tourism, it presents a new development with the reconstruction of houses and landscaping for a calm and sweet life. With the Kapodistrias Plan, the Community of Lefkon joined as a local district in the single Municipality of Paros. In the 2011 census the village has a population of 545 inhabitants [4], while in the 2001 census it numbered 519.
