Koumaradaioi (Κουμαραδαίοι) Samos
Koumaradaioi is a village in the municipality of East Samos of the Regional Unit of Samos with a population of 123 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. The village has a long tradition in the art of pottery in textiles and aromatic plants and is famous for them. Also just outside the village is the historic Monastery of the Great Virgin Mary which was founded in 1586 by the monks Neilo and Dionysios.
Position
The village is built in the SE. slope of Karvounis in a ravine. To the east you can see the Seven Seasons, Mykali, Pythagorion, the whole plain of Chora and Heraion. To the south is the monastery of Megali Panagia and Pagonda. To the west are the Tower and to the north are the Mavratzai.
Terrain
The terrain of the area is mountainous. The village has a large agricultural area, which is covered with olive trees, which is why it has a large production of oil and aromatic plants.
Sights
The village has sights. The holy church of Agios Panteleimon treated with a large outdoor courtyard. Inside the village we will find three smaller churches of Agios Georgios, Agios Konstantinos and Agia Aikaterini and Agios Rafael. Then we find the Primary School which is now used as a cultural center, hosting various events. Next to the school is a large park with recreation area for young children and an outdoor park. In the center of the village we find the square covered by a perennial plane tree. Next to the square are the traditional fountains of the village. In the old days, the inhabitants used to get water from there. The village is famous for its pottery and aromatic plants. Great events of the village are the festival of Agia Kyriaki that celebrates on the seventh of July and the feast of Agios Panteleimon on the twenty-seventh of July. In the place where the village is built, we have the opportunity to see a vast view that starts from Pythagorion, Potokaki, Mylos and Heraion to the coasts of Asia Minor. A little further out of the village is the Monastery of the Great Virgin Mary, a cultural and Greek Orthodox heritage monument dating back to 1586 AD, the Ascetic Cell of the Annunciation, as well as the churches of Agios Paisios, the Transfiguration of the Savior and St. John the Baptist. of Holy Sunday.
History
Near the village there was the temple of Artemis of Karpofagos in pagan times. His name is new. In earlier times it was called Five Houses. One of these 5 houses survives to this day. Then the village was renamed Koumaradai because of the many arbutus (a species of shrub-plant) that are found around the village.
