Kefalochori is a semi-mountainous village of the Regional Unit of Serres at an altitude of 440 meters [1]. According to the 2011 census it has a population of 130 inhabitants, while according to the 2001 census it had a population of 144 inhabitants.
Geography - History
Kefalochori is located on the western border with the Regional Unit of Kilkis. It is built in the mountainous zone surrounded by the mountains Flamouri and Mavrovouni (the southern part of the Krousia Mountains). It is 35 km south of irakleia and 35 SW. of Serres. Its inhabitants are engaged in the cultivation of wheat, maize and tobacco. During the Turkish occupation, the village was called Baskioi or Bass-Kioi, which means Kefalochori due to its geographical location, which then dominated among the other much smaller villages and settlements. During the year 1922, Greeks from Asia Minor settled in the Community, while with the exchange of populations, the Turkish inhabitants of the village left. As Bass-Kioi it is mentioned in 1920 in the Official Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 to be attached to the then community of Makia (Vamvakia). In 1927, with the Government Gazette 7A - 14/01/1927, it was renamed Kefalochori [2]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the Local Community of Kalokastro that belongs to the Municipal Unit of Strymonikos of the Municipality of Heraklion and according to the 2011 census has a population of 130 inhabitants [3].
