Kastanochori (Byzantine Greek: Amurmei) is a village in the Municipality of Visaltia in the former prefecture of Serres. According to the 2011 census, its population is 122 inhabitants.
General and historical data
The previous name of the village was Omur - Vei and since 1920 it has been an autonomous community [1], which was renamed in 1922 to the community of Kastanochori [2] [3]. On September 25, 1941, during the Occupation, men from the "Odysseas Androutsos" guerrilla group attacked the occupying forces stationed in the settlement.
In 1999, with the Kapodistrias program, it merged with other communities in the area, which later became the municipal districts of the municipality, in the Municipality of Tragilos. With the implementation of the Kallikratis program in 2011, it joined the new municipality of Visaltia.
