Karavostamo (Καραβόσταμον) Ikaria
Karavostamo is a seaside village of Ikaria, about 7 km from Evdilos and 31 from Agios Kirikos by road. According to the 2011 census, it has 499 inhabitants. [1]
Karavostamos, belongs to the municipality of Ikaria, of the Regional Unit of Ikaria, located in the North Aegean Region, based on the administrative division of Greece, as it was formed with the program "Kallikratis". [2]
History
Karavostamo used to be called Karavostasi, because it was a mooring point for ships. [1] Also, like all of Ikaria, Karavostamos was attacked by pirates. Thus, the village was only in Gerontos, which is quite high on the mountain, but also in Ai Giorgis, which is located directly on the river Aris. [3]
According to the administrative division of Greece and the “Kapodistrias” plan, until 2010, Karavostamos belonged to the Local Department of Karavostamos, of the former Municipality of Evdilos and the prefecture of Samos. [2]
Morphology
Karavostamo stretches evenly and amphitheatrically from the sea to the mountain of the Athera mountain range (Pramnos), (whose highest peak - as the locals call it - Kambi, reaches 1,037 meters). Finally, it is characterized by rich vegetation and fertile soil. In the village there are many mulberries (syncamines, in the local dialect, but also in the whole of Ikaria), cypresses, plane trees and the mountain surfaces are covered by large bushes, especially the lagadies.
Tradition
The village still observes its customs and traditions even today: on Holy Christmas Days, the locals go from house to house to have fun with their fellow villagers on Holy Days. The custom is as follows: the men, and especially the young people of the village, gather and start going from house to house, singing "Santa Claus" (local carols). The housewives welcome them and offer them food and wine. [4] [5]
Festival in the stream of the village, on the 15th of August.
At Easter, another custom is observed, that of the burning Aphanos. This custom goes back a century. When the village made a special Resurrection, the ones in the upper parish and the ones in the lower part, after all, it was difficult to move at night. In addition, the two churches competed over which area would be most illuminated, whose invisible flame would seem larger when the electricity had not yet arrived.
In Afanos, then, the two parishes of the village are "fighting", the "Panotic" and the "Katontini" (the names come from the geographical location of the parishes). The goal of each team is to burn the invisible that will gather more time than the opponent, to prevail in volume, but also to cause sabotage to the opponent by any means, such as burning or stealing the other's invisible. The custom must have started on the occasion of the need to clean the fields, while later it took the form of a vendetta. Thus, throughout the Holy Week, and the previous one, the younger ones of the village, by all means, are released in the surrounding villages, regardless of distance, to collect mischief (dry bushes, mainly wadding). The "Panotiki" in the surrounding area of Agios Ioannis, in Gerontos, and the "Katotinos" in the port of the village, Gialos, but also in the chapel of Agia Paraskevi, keep the assholes that they collect in their parishes. At the same time, other groups on both sides are building Judas and burning him in the pile of mischief, placing various sparklers inside to create a spectacle. Afanos never stays alone, he is guarded by young people, mainly, all day and all night. Now, they do not burn at the same time, that is, the Resurrection, so the great event of the village is divided into two nights, with the first burning on Holy Saturday when the bells of the Resurrection sound and the second on Easter Sunday night. [6] [6] 7] [4]
In Karavostamos there are three regular festivals and a fish festival on the beach of the village around the first ten days of August [8]
July 1, on the feast of Saints Anargyros.
July 26 at the feast of Agia Paraskevi.
August 17 in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (in Karavostamos the festival takes place on August 17, while the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is on August 15)
In Karavostamos and, more generally, in Ikaria, the festivals benefit the community. Proceeds are used to fund projects for the benefit of the village. [3]
Neighborhoods and Beaches
Panoramic view of the village
Karavostamo has many neighborhoods: Gialos, Tsimbidato, Fuscato, Fundoulato, Raptato, Kouvarato [9] and Gerontos. The names of the neighborhoods were established based on the common surnames brought by the inhabitants. It was common in every district to gather families with the same surname. The center of the village is in Gialos, where most of the worlds gather where there are three taverns / souvlaki restaurants, an ouzo bar, a café, a pizzeria, two mini markets and three bars. The big road that separates the upper part of the village, on which a bakery and a gas station operate, as well as two more mini markets and a souvlaki restaurant, is called a carriage. [10] [11] [12]
Karavostamo has two beaches. One is in Gialos and the other is under Gerontos, Aris Potamos, which gathers the most people. [13] The other, which exists in Gialos, is mainly used, the one on the side of the small port, while the other opposite it is rarely used. Two remarkable places on the beach of Gialos, is a small rock off the sea that the locals call "Kaniaouri", which is now covered with stones to cut the electricity and secondly, the port was completely rebuilt a few years ago and it has his own name: Porto Cannetos. [14]
Sights
Halikas
Karavostamo has four attractions, one of which is Halikas, a beautifully landscaped area, built of stone and dense vegetation, which welcomes the water, descending from the mountain.
And the Watermill on the way to Mars River. [15]
Pefka, a forest area located high in the area of Gerontos, at the end of the village that approaches the mountain.
The stream, above which is the main square of the village, built on a bridge. The stream is used as a parking lot in the summer, but it is the main place where festivals and mainly festivals take place. The stream fills with water in the winter, but in the summer its characteristic vegetation, mainly centuries-old plane trees, blackberries, prickly pear bushes and scattered stones, creates a unique atmosphere for exploration, hiking and climbing. In the stream they find shelter and various separate birds, such as owls [16].
Churches and Education
Karavostamos has 3 churches (and several chapels). The churches are: Agios Ioannis, Agios Anargyros and Agia Paraskevi.
School facilities near Gialos are also maintained. [17]
