Kalamia (Καλαμιά) Arta
Kalamia is a village in the Municipality of Arta with 1080 permanent residents (2011 census), in the plain of Arta and is about 4 km away from the city. [1]
According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Kalamia existed until the end of 2010, a municipal district of the newly established Municipality of Filothei based in Chalkiades. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, Kalamia joined the Municipality of Arta. [2]
History
The old name of the village was Kanesoi. According to the work of Konstantinos Diamantis entitled "Arta and its surroundings during the revolution", Kalamia was a settlement with 50 families during the period when the Greek Revolution broke out in 1821, while according to the work of Spyridon Aravantinos, "History of Ali Pasha of Tepelenlis", Kalamia was a tsifliki of the pasha of Ioannina, who had in his possession most of the plain. [3] [4]
Panagiotis Aravantinos in his work "Chronography of Epirus" informs us that, based on the list of the census of 1845, Kalamia, in terms of ownership, belonged to the category "muatzeli" and lived in it 45 Christian families. [5] The report of the Russian Sub-Consortium of Arta, in 1877, informs us that 15 Christian families lived in Kalamia and the village was owned by Ibrahim Efendi. [6]
Ifikratis Kokkidis also refers to Kalamia in his work "Journeys of Epirus and Thessaly" published by the Greek Ministry of the Army (Athens 1880) and gives us the information that the village was inhabited by about 400 people. I. Kokkidis informs us that the province of Arta was divided into 2 areas: the area of Arta and the area of Preveza. The area of Arta was in turn divided into 7 sections: Potamia section, Vryseos section, Radovyzi section, Tzoumerka section, Kambou section, Karvasara section and Lakkas section. Kalamia was part of the Kampos section. [7]

In the "Essay on the History of Arta & Preveza" (published in 1884) by Serafeim Xenopoulos, Metropolitan of Arta, reference is made to Kalamias. According to this source, at the time of the visit of the Metropolitan of Arta, Kalamia was one of the 5 parishes that made up the village of Chalkiades. The other 4 were Chalkiades Bei, Chalkiades Ginou, Souliogiorgousou and Sakellariou. The inhabitants of the church were in the sanctuary of Agios Konstantinos and Eleni, in which 2 or 3 priests were officiating. The Metropolitan of Arta also mentions that in Chalkiades there was a school where a teacher taught and 120 students attended. [8]
An equally important source is the Ottoman census of 1895 (Salnames of Ioannina for the financial year 1311 [1895], seventh edition). [9] According to the relevant Ottoman law, in force from 1864, the primary division of the empire was the vilayet ("prefecture" or "general administration"). Each vilayet was divided into santzaki and those into kazades. According to this census, the village belonged to Kazas Lourou, who was in the sandzaki of Preveza, which in turn belonged to the vilayet of Ioannina. Based on this census, 43 families (khanedes) with a total population of 188 people (107 men, 81 women) lived in Kalamia.
During the unfortunate Greek-Turkish war of 1897, the village was temporarily liberated. As reported in the "History of the Greek Nation", the Greek army until the night of April 23, 1897 had liberated the villages of Plisioi, Kirkizates, Gavria, Psathotopi, Mytikas, Aneza, Kalogeriko, Vigla, Rachi, Kalokatros, Zengam, Keramates, Kalomodia, Agia Paraskevi, Kostakioi, Akropotamia, Neochori, Anthotopos, Chalkiades, Rokka, Agios Spyridonas, Eleftherochori, Kampi and the city of Philippi. [10] Finally, with the mediation of European forces and Russia, on September 20, hostilities ceased and peace was signed.
The final liberation of the village took place between 6 and 9 October 1912, when the first Greek battalions crossed the bridge of Arta and at 2 noon repulsed the Turks and established themselves in Kostakios and the area of Marathi. For the next 2 days, the Greek army captured and fortified the village of Plisios along with Rokka and Chalkiades.
In 1910, the Diocese of Nikopolis and Preveza published the census data that took place in the same year throughout the ecclesiastical region and informs us that Kalamia belonged to the Louros department and the village was inhabited by 339 people. [11]
Location and access
The village is adjacent to the villages of Chalkiades, Kirkizates and Rokka. [12] It is connected by road to Arta via the Antirriou-Ioannina National Road. The village is served by the Kompoti-Filothei line, of the Urban KTEL Arta. [13]
