Galanado (Γαλανάδο) Naxos

Galanado is a lowland village in western Naxos at an altitude of 70-100 meters and has 455 inhabitants (2011 census). [1] It is about 5 km SE. from Naxos Town.

Galanado is located in the basin of "Livadi" at an altitude of 90 m. It is one of the most fertile areas of the island, which in fact has very satisfactory water supply.

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and animal husbandry. Characteristically, there is a large production of potatoes and milk. There are many churches in the village, but the largest is the Holy Temple of the Holy Spirit. In addition, on the outskirts of the village there is the Tower of Belonia, an impressive example of a Venetian mansion.

To the north of the village are the archeological sites of Melanes and Agkidia.

It has been a traditional settlement since 1988. [2] [3]

Administrative changes

In 1835, with 153 inhabitants (41 families), a seat was set in the newly established Bible City of Naxos Province. [4] [18] [19]
In 1845, the settlement ceased to be the seat of the Biblical municipality. [20]
In 1912, the municipality of Biblical was abolished and the Biblical community was created, where the settlement was annexed. [21] [22]
In 1919 he was detached from the Biblical community and was appointed seat of the Galanadou community. [23]
In 1997, with the implementation of the Kapodistrias program (law 2539/97), the settlement was annexed to the municipality of Naxos. [24] Specifically, with the Kapodistrias program, it belonged to the Municipal Department of Galanadou, of the Municipality of Naxos, of the prefecture of Cyclades, to the geographical department of the Aegean Islands. [17]
In 2010, with the implementation of the Kallikratis program (law 3852/2010), the settlement was annexed to the newly established municipality of Naxos & Small Cyclades. [25]

Today, after the last change of 2010 (Kallikratis program), it constitutes the Local Community of Galanadou, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Naxos, the municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, the regional unit of Naxos (the former prefecture of Cyclades), in the South Aegean region. [1]
