Flampouro is a lowland village of the Regional Unit of Serres with an altitude of 15 meters [1].
Geography - History
Flampouro is located in the center of the plain of Serres, south of the river Strymon, at a distance of 9.5 km (driving) NE. of Nigrita and 21 km N. of Serres. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture, cultivating mainly wheat, corn, cotton, sugar beets, industrial tomatoes, barley and alfalfa. The village has a tradition of organ playing zourna and daouli [2]. The old name of the village is Bairaktar [3] or Bairaktar Mahalas and during the Turkish occupation it was a tsifliki of a Turkish official (probably Bairaktari = flag bearer) whose lands were worked by the Greeks of the area who built the first landscape according to the huts of the settlement and tradition lived in the old neighboring settlements: Triangle, Kara Orman (Black Forest) and Georgoulas [4].
Administratively
It is officially reported as Bairaktar in 1920, after the liberation, in the Official Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 to be annexed to the then community of Nigriti. In 1923, with the Official Gazette 41B - 26/05/1923, it was renamed Flampouro [5]. According to the plan, Kallikratis constitutes the Local Community of Flampourou, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nigritis of the Municipality of Visaltia and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 837 inhabitants.
