Administrative Region : Peloponnese
Regional unit : Lakonia
Elos [1] (Dourali [2] or Dourali) is a village in the Laconia Regional Unit of the Peloponnese Region and a local community of the ecclesiastical Municipality of Evrotas [3]. Elos is located in the southern part of Laconia, near the mouth of the river Evrotas and is 43 km away from Sparta. Its population is, according to the 2011 census, 742 inhabitants.
References to Elos (a city of the Achaeans initially) in Ancient Greece we have from Homer, where in the New Catalog in the Iliad it is described as "Ifalon Ptolethron Ilos" (Ifalon = steep, Ptolethron = city with a citadel, walled city).
It is also reported that the coastal Elos had taken part in the Trojan War with 20 warships.
The local name "Dourali-Dourali", from which the inhabitants of "Douraliotes" or "Douraliotes" are named, may come from the address Dorialotes, ie those who have been conquered by the spear or the Dorians ( with the Doric conquest of Laconia).
The founder of Elos [4] is mentioned by Pausanias and Strabo, the son of Perseus, Elios, from whom the name Eilotes probably came.
Its soil is fertile (as in the other villages-towns of Laconia), producing one of the best citrus fruits in Greece.
The fertility of the fields is due to their fertilization by the waters of Evrotas. At times, however, even during periods of heavy and continuous rainfall and in combination with the outflow of the Borva (dry torrent where it empties into the plain of the village) the village is flooded. The great flood of 1998 had caused great damage with the water level exceeding 1.2 meters.
The football team of the village, with an important history, is called Evrotas Elous [5]. The founding year of the team is October 1, 1929. It was recognized as a club in 1930 with decision number 699/26/9, based in Elos and the stadium in its current position from 8-9-1963.
The municipal stadium of Elos "Vassilios Michelakos" has a lawn, stands and lighting. The team's colors are red and white, with the second appearance being blue-white.
