Administrative Region : Central Macedonia
Regional unit : Serres
Efkarpia (Byzantine Greek: Koutzi) is a village in the Municipality of Visaltia in the Prefecture of Serres. It is 55 km from the city of Serres and 110 km from Thessaloniki. It has a population of 520 inhabitants (2011 Census). [1] The place is quite fertile thanks to the Serrai plain, which is one of the largest in Greece, which is leaked by Strymon, which passes very close to the village. Its previous name was Koutsios [2] and since 1920 it has been an autonomous community [3], which was renamed in 1927 to the Community of Efkarpia [4]. In 1999, with the Kapodistrias program, it merged with other communities in the area, which later became the municipal districts of the Municipality of Tragilos. With the implementation of the Kallikratis program in 2011, it joined the new municipality of Visaltia as a community.
Historical data
Near Efkarpia and specifically in the location of Mesovounia, a necropolis was found that belonged to a polis of ancient Visaltia, which had flourished during the ancient and Roman era. Probably from this location come the inscriptions found in the nearby Paliochori Kastri [5]. Also, in a neighboring location, a Macedonian tomb with beautiful marble door leaves had been found earlier. These doors are on display today at the Archaeological Museum of Serres. In addition, south of the settlement, is the Byzantine "Tower of Koutzi", which owes its name to the Byzantine name of the village.
