Agriani (Αγριανή) Serres

Agriani is a mountain village in the Regional Unit of Serres with an altitude of 620 meters [1].

Geography - History

Agriani is located on the eastern border with the Regional Unit of Drama, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Menoikio [2]. It is 7 km N. from Nea Zichni, 34 km E from Serres and 47 km S -SW. from Drama. The old name of the village is Klepousna (which meant a closed place) and so it is mentioned in 1920 in the Government Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 to be annexed to the then community of Ziliachovi (Nea Zichni). In 1927 with the Government Gazette 7A - 14/01/1927 it was renamed to Agriani [3], which comes from the ancient Thracian tribe of Agrians who lived in Menoikio and which was famous for the military technique and bravery of its men. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the Local Community of Agriani, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nea Zichni of the Municipality of Nea Zichni and according to the 2011 census has a population of 295 inhabitants [4].
