Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος) Achaia

Agios Nikolaos is a small semi-mountainous village and former community of Achaia and a municipal district of the Municipality of Larissa [1]. It is located on the border of the prefectures of Achaia and Ilia.

The Local Community (former DD) of Agios Nikolaos Spata [2] in the 2011 census had a population of 264 inhabitants [3] and includes Agios Nikolaos (197 inhabitants), the settlement of Agios Konstantinos (67 inhabitants) and the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos [ 4].

Inside the settlement operates a Primary School dating from 1881.

Historical data

The settlement was two hours away in 1885 from Manolada, the seat of the then municipality of Vuprasia to which it belonged administratively.

The name of the village until 24/01/1957 (Government Gazette 11A) was Spata [6] [1]. The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, located a short distance from the village, gave it its current name.

Administrative development

From 1835 to 1841 it belonged to the Municipality of Xenia [7] and then to the then Municipality of Vouprasia until 1912 when the Municipalities were abolished and the Communities were established as self-governing entities [8]. In 1912 he joined the Community of Psari (Vouprasio) [9] until 30/11/1927 where, with the Government Gazette 296A, an independent community of Spata Achaia was created [1]. With the Government Gazette 244A of 04/12/1997, according to the Administrative Reform "Kapodistrias", it is annexed to the Municipality of Larissa until 2010 which joined the Municipality of Western Achaia (Government Gazette 87A - 07/06/2010) based on the Administrative Reform "Kallikratis" [10].
