The Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB, ASOEE, or OPA) was founded in 1920 in Athens, Greece.
Introduction
It was formerly known in Greece as ASOEE: "Ανωτάτη Σχολή Οικονομικών και Εμπορικών Επιστημών (ΑΣΟΕΕ), Anotati Sholi Oikonomikon kai Eborikon Epistimon (ASOEE)".
Today its Greek name is: "Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΟΠΑ), Oikonomiko Panepistimio Athinon (OPA)". However, the general public still refers to it as ASOEE.
The initial name of the university after its establishment was "Athens School of Commercial Studies". In 1926 it was renamed as "Athens University of Economics and Business". The today's name (OPA) was given in 1989.
In Greece it is the third oldest higher educational institute and the oldest in the fields of Economics and Business.
International recognition
Der Spiegel listed AUEB in the 25th position in the list of all European universities, and the Journal of Econometric Theory lists AUEB in the 48th international place regarding Econometrics.
History
- Prior to 1955: Only one degree offered: Economics and Business combined.
- 1955: Two degrees offered, one in Economics and the other in Business Administration.
- 1984: Divided in three departments: Department of Economics, the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Statistics and Informatics.
