Astynomi

(ἀστυνόμοι). The title of ten officers at Athens drawn annually by lot from the ten tribes, five for the city and five for the Piraeus. They formed a kind of city police, responsible for the cleanliness and order of the streets, and probably for the safety of the public buildings.
