Ο Γκυστάβ Ντορέ (Gustave Doré, /dɔːˈreɪ/; Γαλλικά: [ɡystav dɔʁe]; 6 Ιανουαρίου 1832 – 23 Ιανουαρίου 1883) ήταν Γάλλος καλλιτέχνης, εικονογράφος γλύπτης και χαράκτης.

Βίος
Γεννήθηκε στο Στρασβούργο στις 6 Ιανουαρίου 1832. Σε ηλικία 12 ετών άρχισε να σκαλίζει σε τσιμέντο. Στην ηλικία των δεκαπέντε ο Ντορέ ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του ως γελοιογράφος για την γαλλική εφημερίδα Le Journal pour rire[1], και στη συνέχεια άρχισε να κερδίζει διαγωνισμούς ανάθεσης εικονογράφησης για βιβλία των Ραμπελαί, Μπαλζάκ, Μίλτον και του Δάντη.
Το 1853 τού ζητήθηκε να εικονογραφήσει τα έργα του Λόρδου Βύρωνα[2]. Η συγκεκριμένη ανάθεση ακολουθήθηκε από την εικονογράφηση της Νέας Βίβλου. Το 1856 εικονογράφησε το Ο θρύλος του περιπλανώμενου Ιουδαίου για ένα σύντομο ποίημα του Πιερ-Ζαν ντε Ρανζέ εμπνευσμένο από μυθιστόρημα του Οζέν Συ το 1845.[3][4].

Στη δεκαετία 1860 εικονογράφησε γαλλική έκδοση του Δον Κιχώτη του Μιγκέλ ντε Θερβάντες. Οι εικογραφήσεις του ιππότη και του ακολούθου του, Σάντσο Πάντσα, έγιναν τόσο διάσημες ώστε επηρέασαν αναγνώστες, καλλιτέχνες, ακόμη και θεατρικούς ή κινηματογραφικούς σκηνοθέτες ως προς την όψη των δύο χαρακτήρων. Ο Ντορέ εικονογράφησε επίσης μια έκδοση από το έργο Το Κοράκι του Έντγκαρ Άλλαν Πόε το 1883[5].
Οι εικονογραφήσεις του Ντορέ για την αγγλική Βίβλο το 1866 έτυχαν ευρείας απήχησης και το 1867 ο εικονογράφος έκανε μια μεγάλη έκθεση του έργου του στο Λονδίνο. Αυτή η έκθεση οδήγησε στην ίδρυση της Doré Gallery στην Bond Street, του Λονδίνου. Το 1869, Μπλασάρντ Τζέρολντ (Blanchard Jerrold), γιος του Ντάγκλας Ουίλιαμ Τζέρολντ (Douglas William Jerrold), του πρότεινε να συνεργαστούν για να δημιουργήσουν ένα ολοκληρωμένο πορτρέτο του Λονδίνου. Ο Τζέρολντ είχε πάρει την ιδέα από το έργο ιδέα από το Μικρόκοσμος του Λονδίνου παραγωγή των Ρούντολφ Άκερμαν (Rudolph Ackermann), Ουίλιαμ Πάιν (William Pyne), και Τόμας Ρόουλαντσον (Thomas Rowlandson) το 1808. O Ντορέ υπέγραψε πενταετές συμβόλαιο με τους εκδότες Grant & Co με αντίτιμο ένα υπέρογκο ποσό (£10,000 ανά έτος) και την υποχρέωση της παραμονής του επί τρεις μήνες ανά έτος στο Λονδίνο. Αν και ο Ντορέ ήταν γνωστός εκείνη την εποχή κυρίως για τους πίνακές του, οι ξυλογραφίες και τα χαρακτικά που έκανε για τον Τζέρολντ, είναι εκείνα για τα οποία πραγματικά διακρίθηκε ως καλλιτέχνης με ατομικό όραμα.
Το ολοκληρωμένο βιβλίο, London: A Pilgrimage, (Λονδίνο: Ένα Προσκύνημα) με 180 χαρακτικά, δημοσιεύτηκε το 1872. Παρόλο που είχε μεγάλη εμπορική επιτυχία και έτυχε ευνοϊκής υποδοχής από το αναγνωστικό κοινό, το έργο έλαβε αρνητικές κριτικές από τους κριτικούς της εποχής. Ορισμένες από αυτές τις κριτικές ήταν στραμμένες στο γεγονός ότι ο Ντορέ φαινόταν να εστιάζει στη φτώχεια ορισμένων τμημάτων του Λονδίνου. Κατηγορήθηκε επίσης από το The Art Journal ότι περισσότερο "επινοούσε παρά απεικόνιζε"[6]. Η εφημερίδα Westminster Review 'εγραψε πως "ο Ντορέ μάς δίνει σκίτσα με τα πλέον κοινότυπα και εκχυδαϊσμένα εξωτερικά χαρακτηριστικά"[7]. Παρά τις αρνητικές κριτικές, ο Ντορέ έλαβε αναθέσεις και από άλλους Βρετανούς εκδότες.
Η ύστερη περίοδος του Ντορέ περιλαμβάνει εικονογραφήσεις των νέων εκδόσεων των Έργα του Τόμας Χουντ, Η Μπαλλάντα του Γέρου Ναυτικού του Κόουλριτζ, Χαμένος Παράδεισος, του Μίλτον , Τα Ειδύλλια του Βασιλιά, του Τέννυσον, και της Θείας Κωμωδίας. Το έργο του Ντορέ εμφανίστηκε επίσης στην εβδομαδιαία εφημερίδα The Illustrated London News.
Ο Ντορέ ποτέ δεν παντρεύτηκε, και συνέχισε να ζει με τη μητέρα του στο Παρίσι, εικονογραφώντας βιβλία έως τον θάνατό του μετά από σύντομη ασθένεια. Ο τάφος του βρίσκεται στο κοιμητήριο Περ Λασέζ του Παρισιού.
