Ο Ζαν Αντουάν Βαττώ (Antoine Watteau) (10 Οκτωβρίου 1684-18 Ιουλίου 1721), περισσότερο γνωστός με το όνομα Αντουάν Βαττώ ήταν Γάλλος ζωγράφος και ένας από τους πρώτους εκπροσώπους του ροκοκό. Μερικά από τα πιο δημοφιλή θέματά του αναπαριστούν σκηνές από το χώρο του θεάτρου.
Βιογραφία
Γιος ενός εμπόρου υφασμάτων ή κατ' άλλους γιος οικοδόμου, ο Αντουάν Βαττώ έζησε σε μια πολυμελή οικογένεια. Ήδη σε ηλικία 10 ετών ξεκίνησε να ασχολείται με την ζωγραφική σε ηλικία 15 ετών παίρνοντας μαθήματα από έναν επαγγελματία ζωγράφο, αρκετά γνωστό στη γενέτειρα του.
Το 1702 κατέφυγε στο Παρίσι, μόνος, χωρίς προστασία και οικονομική βοήθεια και ξεκίνησε να δουλεύει περιοδικά στα εργαστήρια πολλών ζωγράφων.
Πέθανε το 1721, στα 37 του χρόνια.
Η τεχνική του
Η τεχνική του η οποία χαρακτηρίζει τον Αντουάν Βαττώ, είναι τα ωραία χρώματα, ο απαλός φωτισμός και τα ειδυλλιακά θέματα των πινάκων του.
Αντίθετα με την προσωπική του ζωή που δεν γνωρίζουμε σχεδόν τίποτα, για την καλλιτεχνική του παραγωγή γνωρίζουμε σχεδόν τα πάντα. Άφησε γύρω στους διακόσιους πίνακες, πλήθος σχεδίων και αρκετά χαρακτικά. Και όλα αυτά μέσα σε 15 μόλις χρόνια.
Ήρθε αντιμέτωπος με τον συντηρητικό ακαδημαϊσμό της εποχής του κι η αναγνώρισή του ήρθε πολύ αργότερα.
Συνήθιζε να ζωγραφίζει ειδυλλιακές σκηνές στην εξοχή με ανθρώπους να γλεντούν και να χαίρονται τη ζωή τους. Ονομαστές είναι, οι περίφημες «fêtes galantes» (σκηνές από υπαίθριες γιορτές).
