Asprogia is located 33 kilometers northeast of Paphos, at an altitude of 640 meters above sea level. It borders Pano Panagia to the east and north, Kritou Marottou to the west and north, Mamoudali to the south and Kannaviou to the southwest.
Name
The name Asprogia means white soil. There is, however, also the opinion that the village was previously called Aspro Panagia. In 1958 the Turkish Cypriot residents of the community adopted the alternative name Ahtepe, meaning white hill.
Population
Until the period 1963-64, Asprogia was a mixed community, i.e. Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived in it. The majority alternated between the two communities at various times.
During the bi-communal disturbances of 1963-64, all Turkish Cypriot residents of the community left the community on 7 February 1964. They settled in Anadio, Chios and Lapithiou, where they remained until 1974. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, they moved in the northern part of Cyprus. The move took place in two phases. In the first phase, many residents escaped through the mountains. In the second phase, the residents were moved with the UNFICYP escort on September 1, 1975. They settled in Makrasyka, Lapithos, Palaikithro and Famagusta.
Its Greek Cypriot residents remained in Asprogia. The houses of the Turkish Cypriots turned into ruins over time. In the following decades, many Greek Cypriot residents left the community due to urban unrest.
