Agios Therapon (Greek: Άγιος Θεράπων ) is a community of the District of Limassol.
Agios Therapon is a mountain village (h. 640 m) part of the so called Krasochoria in the Troodos Mountain region.
Agios Therapon is located in the Troodos mountain range. It is built at an altitude of 570 meters.[16] It belongs to the geographical region of the wine villages. To the south it borders Pano Kyvides, Kato Kyvides and the community of Souni-Zanatzia, to the northwest with Agios Ambrosios, to the west and southwest with Vouni, to the east and southeast with Lofou and to the northeast with Alassa.
History
According to Louis de Mas Latri, the village in 1461 belonged to a feudal lord named Petros Podokatorou. In the area of the village, specifically in the area where the sanctuary and the church of Agios Therapon are located, the saint himself practiced asceticism, from whom the village took its name.
Natural environment
The relief of the area is hilly, dissected by deep streams. The Kryos River passes through the area. In the barren and uncultivated lands grows rich natural vegetation with aspalath, mussophilia, tremithi and thyme.
The main agricultural occupation of the villagers for decades has been viticulture, which occupies most of the village's arable land. The cultivation of vines is favored by the composition of the soil and the climatic conditions of the region. The main varieties produced were black grape, sultana, malaga and cardinal. In modern times, new varieties are cultivated.
In addition, fruit trees (eg olives and carobs), citrus fruits and vegetables thrive in the village.
Architecture
Folk architecture prevails in the village. Most roads are gravel or paved. Important from an architectural point of view are the votes, a type of building. The ground floor of these buildings is a vaulted room that is used as a warehouse for jars, wine or as a stable for animals, while above this room is built with local stone the anogi for the accommodation of the owners.
Churches and chapels
In the village there is a church and eight chapels. The church is dedicated to Saint Therapont. Its construction began in 1816 and was completed in 1880.
The chapels of the village are: Agios Therapondas, Agios Georgios, Agion Theodorin and Myroforon, Agia Paraskevi, Panagia Chrysospiliotissa, Agions Saranta Martyron, Holy Cross, and Archistratigon.
