Altar Frontal

The frontal used to coat the front of the altar is often integrated in a group referred to as ecclesiastic ornament which includes vestments and small attires used in liturgical celebrations This altar frontal is an isolated example that must have had a larger purpose since it consists of three panels without format continuity. At the centre supported by eight angels, it is represented the Virgin and Child over a crescent moon and serpent. Close to the angles small motifs are represented shaped as clouds with typical Chinese formal characteristics. It is certainly one the oldest example of Chinese embroidery production for the Portuguese market.
