Altar Frontal

The frontal, used to coat tho front of the altar, Is often integrated in a group referred to as ecclesiastic ornament, which includes vestments and small attires used in liturgical celebrations. The altar frontal is an isolated example that must have had a larger purpose, since it consists of three panels without formal continuity. At the centre. supported by eight angels, it is represented the Virgin and Child over a crescent moon and serpent. Close to the angels, small motifs are represented shaped as clouds with typical Chinese formal characteristics. It is certainly one of the oldest examples of Chinese embroidery production for the Portuguese market.
