In this craft, the pilot assumes a position that allows him to balance himself. Fixed at the
centre of the craft are the wings which are similar to those of a large bird. The extremities
are operated by means of a cable controlled by the pilot with the handles. Observing the
flight of birds, Leonardo understood that the inner part of the wing moves more slowly than the
outer part, therefore the work of the inner part is to support the outer.

Μέσα σε αυτό το σκάφος ο χειριστής λαμβάνει τέτοια θέση, (οριζόντια) που να του επιτρέπει να ελέγχει την ισορροπία του. Σταθερά στο κέντρο του σκάφους είναι τα φτερά, παρόμοια με αυτά ενός μεγάλου πουλιού. Τα δύο άκρα λειτουργούν με την βοήθεια καλωδίων και ελέγχονται από τον χειριστή με λαβές. Μελετώντας την πτήση των πτηνών, ο Λεονάρντο παρατήρησε ότι το εσωτερικό μέρος της πτέρυγας κινείται πιο αργά από το εξωτερικό μέρος, παρέχοντας υποστήριξη στο εξωτερικό.
