In all machines designed for lifting great weights, this device, above all others, was the most
essential. It consisted of a wheel with teeth set at an acute angle and a flat-tipped hook
that engaged the teeth one at a time so that the wheel could not turn backwards

Από όλες τις μηχανές που σχεδιάστηκαν για την ανύψωση μεγάλων φορτίων, αυτήν η συσκευή σε σύγκριση με όλες τις άλλες ήταν η πιο ουσιαστική. Αποτελείτο από έναν τροχό με δόντια τα οποία τοποθετήθηκαν υπό οξεία γωνία και έναν επίπεδο γάντζο, που λειτουργούσε σαν αιχμή και δέσμευε τα δόντια, ένα κάθε φορά, έτσι ώστε ο τροχός να μην μπορεί να γυρίσει προς τα πίσω.
