Leonardo studied many different types of flexible chains used for the transmission of
continous motion. However the square shaoe of teeth and the weights hanging on them lead
us to believe that they were meant to transmit discontinous motion and in particular, were
conceived for release mechanism like clocks. Chains are also used in one of the most
famous macines: the bicycle.

Ο Λεονάρντο μελέτησε πολλούς διαφορετικούς τύπους εύκαμπτων καδένων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν
για τη μετάδοση της συνεχούς κίνησης. Εντούτοις η τετραγωνική μορφή των δοντιών και τα βάρη
που αναρτούσαν σε αυτές μας οδηγούν να πιστέψουμε ότι προορίζονταν για να μεταβιβάζουν
την ασυνεχή κίνηση και εν μέρει είχαν επινοηθεί για μηχανισμούς διαφυγής, όπως τα ρολόγια,
Οι καδένες χρησιμοποιήθηκαν επίσης σε μια από τις διασημότερες μηχανές, το ποδήλατο.
