Walter Elmer Schofield (1885-1974) was an American landscape and marine painter. Born in Philadelphia, he emigrated to England, where he painted the landscapes of England, France, California and Connecticut. His paintings are held in private collections as well as exhibited in museums in the United States and Europe.

Early life

Walter Elmer Schofield was born in 1885.[1] He was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Académie Julian.[1]


Career

Schofield was a landscape and marine painter.[1] He painted the landscapes of rural England, France, California and Connecticut.[2]

His paintings are held in private collections as well as exhibited in museums in the United States like the Woodmere Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,[2] and the Art Institute of Chicago.[3] They are also exhibited internationally at the Godolphin Estate in England and the Musée d'Orsay in France.[2]


Personal life and death

Schofield married Murielle Redmayne, an English woman.[1] He emigrated to England in 1897, and they had a son, Sydney Schofield.[1] He died in 1974.[1]
