The Sacrifice of Isaac
Santiago Rebull Gordillo (1829 - 1902) was a Mexican painter of the nineteenth century. Rebull, son of the Catalan José Rebull and his Mexican wife Josefa Gordillo, began his studies at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México at the age of 18 years and studied under Pelegrín Clavé. For his portrait of Abel's death "La Muerte de Abel" he was awarded a scholarship for further studies in Europe, where he seven years studied at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. After returning to his home country, he taught there from 1860 at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México and he was rector there one year. He was the court painter of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and painted the most famous portrait of the Emperor.
