José Valentín Nogales y Sevilla (Málaga, November 3, 1860- November 28, 1939) was a Spanish painter and watercolorist of the s. XIX and early XX, specialized in themes of flowers and landscapes. Belonging to the Malaga School of Painting, he was influenced by Bernardo Ferrándiz and Muñoz Degrain.
Biography
He was born on November 3, 1860 and was baptized eight days after his birth in San Juan. His family, working class, made an effort so that as a child did not lack anything and at 18 years went to work as an assistant in the office of railways performing their role until the age of 30.
José Nogales would enroll in the school of fine arts during the nights to learn drawing with Bernardo Ferrándiz as teacher, who emphasized his skill in drawing and watercolor. He taught until his retirement classes at the School of Fine Arts and from 1910 was an academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo, after entering as a teacher of this school in 1888, named meritorious assistant of the school and later assistant numerary.
Between 1902 and 1903 he obtained the position of director of the school, at the same time that it knew Antonio Muñoz Degraín of which it would become good friend and influence in its painting.
The work of José Nogales is abundant: in the funds of the Museum of Fine Arts in Malaga there are two paintings of his.
He regularly submitted his works to regional and national exhibitions and ceremonies, obtaining a third medal at the National Exhibition of 1890, second medals in 1876 and 1878, as well as a decoration at the 1904 edition. He was awarded a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Vatican in 1888, the same award he obtained in the International of 1892, held in Madrid, for the work entitled Santa Casilda.
His death occurred in 1939 and is buried in the Cemetery of San Miguel de Málaga, a cemetery in which is also buried some of his masters and comrades as Muñoz Degrain or Moreno Carbonero.
