José Duarte Montilla (Córdoba, 21 January 1928) is a Spanish painter member of the group Instrument 57.
Biography
José Duarte studied in the School of Fine arts Santa Isabel of Hungary of Seville from 1944. It participated in an exhibition of bullfighting art that celebrated in the Faculty of Veterinary of Córdoba in 1948, with a portrait of Lagartijo the big. In 1950 it graduated in Fine arts and exposed in the Municipal Room of Art of Córdoba. To the following year, initiates his stage like professor of Drawing in the School of Arts and Jobs of Córdoba.[1]
Group Espacio
In 1953 assist to the International Congress of Abstract Art of Santander, where could visit the International Exhibition of Abstract Art opened in the Municipal Museum.[2]
In 1954 it founds beside his fellow Juan Serrano the ephemeral Group Space. His first influences come of the hand of Daniel Vázquez Díaz. His increasing interest by the abstraction approaches to painters like Jorge Oteiza or to the architect Rafael of the Sickle.
It travels to Paris in 1956 with the painter and fellow Juan Serrano. There they know to the galerista Kanhweiler and visit to Picasso in Vallauris. It begins to merodear by the coffee Rond Point of Paris, where will take place the birth, in May 1957, of the group of art Instrument 57, group that was active until 1962.
Equipo 57
The Equipo 57 constituted in Paris, in May 1957, integrated by young artists and architects concerned by conceptual forms. The founders were the sculptors Jorge Oteiza and Luis Aguilera, the painters José Duarte, Ángel Duarte and Agustín Ibarrola, as well as the architect and painter Juan Serrano. Influenced by the informal art, cultivated a geometrical abstract style and used a very intense chromatism. During the first years, the Team celebrated exhibitions in Paris, Copenhagen and Madrid, between other cities.[3]
In 1959, beside other mates of the group, affiliates to the PCE, what speaks of his increasing social commitment.[4]
The group will dissolve in 1963, with the arrest of Agustín Ibarrola. In this moment, José Duarte replantea his aims like artist.
Social painting
To 1965 the painter integrates in the group of grabadores Popular Image, and takes part in many of his exhibitions. It begins a stage figurativa, that will not abandon already in the rest of his career. From a figuración expressionist of marked social content and plagada of irony (boys deform, monks, blocks of barren houses, barrels of oil), Duarte will evolve to positions increasingly realistic. They are famous his farmers, women that reflect the hardness of the Andalusian rural life. In 1966 it obtained the Prize of Honour in the Contest of Painting and Sculpture of the Deputation of Córdoba with his picture The barquilla green.[5]
Years 80
To 1980 Duarte changes of life. Leave Córdoba and installs in Madrid. His works dye of hiriente esnobismo. Shoes of design, swimming pools and bañistas, houses ostentosas, platitudinous parties. It is the called pop art. Nevertheless, during some years, Duarte leaves to expose. In 1991 it decides to take out to the light all the works made in this stage. From this moment, his figuración return to reasons more intimate and sensual, acclimatised in daily surroundings.
