Jerome Thompson (b. 1814 in Middleboro, Massachusetts, d. 1886) - American painter, member of the National Academy of Design.
He was born into a family of painter portraitist Cephas Thompson, who initially refused to educate his son in the profession a painter, because he wanted him to be a farmer. Interest in art, however, prevailed. Thompson worked initially painting portraits (at the time portrayed, among others, Abraham Quary, the last surviving member of an Indian tribe Nantucket). At age 17, he founded a studio in Barnstable, Massachusetts, which in 1835 moved to New York. In the early 50s the nineteenth century became interested in landscape, in which a large role played good reception image Pic Nick, Camden, Maine, issued at the National Academy of Design. In the years 1852-1854 he studied in England. After returning to the United States he worked in Mineola on Long Island and Glen Gardner, New Jersey. Suffered considerable artistic success and financial, among others, thanks to the popularity of lithographs made on the basis of his work.
The artist is known mainly for genre scenes, usually of a rustic, where the priority lies in the landscape. His suffused light work style reminiscent of paintings painters of the Hudson River School, are rich in light effects and tonal subtlety. Foreground scenes are usually small and are usually exposed to complement the background landscape.
The largest collection of works Thompson are the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
