God appears to Abraham at Shechem. Claes Cornelisz. Moeyaert
God appears to Abraham at Shechem Abraham leaves with his family from Haran to go to Canaan. Arrived in Shechem God appears - shown here as a beam of light - to Abraham. He promises him the land of Canaan.
Signed and dated on the stone right: CL (together) Mooyaert f / 1628. In the group of figures surrounding the kneeling down Abraham probably the painter himself and his family portrayed as historiated portraits.
In a mountainous landscape, covered with groves and ruins where exotic birds, with the prospect of a city, Abraham and Lot with their people and livestock just arrived from Ur to Canaan near Shechem.
Shown is the time when Yahweh's voice (symbolized by light rays coming from the top left) to the kneeling down with Abraham heard the promise this land of Canaan to give to his descendants (Genesis 12: 6-7). Behind Abraham's wife Sarah, with folded hands and seated on an ass, also a fiercely gesticulating bearded man, probably Lot. On either side of Sarah two women, towards the center two pastors depicted young men and an older woman and man. The right image plane is controlled by a family group consisting of a man and a woman married couple with four children. Between them in a black-clad older man. On the right edge image a young man on a dapple gray. The center and left foreground two cattle, three sheep, a goat and a dog.
