Zygos (Ζυγός) Arta

Zygos Markiniadas is a small settlement in the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufa with 107 permanent residents (2011 census) and is about 18 km from the city of Arta. [1]

According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Zygos existed until the end of 2010, a municipal district of the newly formed Municipality of Peta, based in Peta. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, Zygos joined the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas. Libra together with Markiniada, Megla, Diasella and Melates constitute the local community of Markiniada with a total population of 434 inhabitants.

History

The first source that informs us of the existence of the village is the archives of Venice, [2] in which we are informed that in the year 1697, Libra, along with many other villages of Arta, paid taxes to the Venetian administration in exchange for protection from pirate raids.

Panagiotis Aravantinos in his work "Chronography of Epirus" informs us that the village belonged to the Diocese of Larissa while based on the list of the census of 1845, Zygos, in terms of ownership, belonged to the category "muantzeli" and was inhabited by 11 Christian families. . [3]

Ifikratis Kokkidis also refers to the village in his work "Journeys of Epirus and Thessaly" published by the Greek Ministry of the Army (Athens 1880) and gives us the information that the village was inhabited by about 100 people. I. Kokkidis informs us that the province of Arta was divided into 2 areas: the area of Arta and the area of Preveza. The area of Arta was in turn divided into 7 sections: Potamia section, Vryseos section, Radovyzi section, Tzoumerka section, Kambou section, Karvasara section and Lakka section. Zygos was part of the Radovizi section. [4]

In "Essay Historian on Arta & Preveza" (published in 1884) by Seraphim Xenopoulos, Metropolitan of Arta, reference is made to Libra. According to this source, at the time of the visit of the Metropolitan of Arta, about 20 families lived in the village. The inhabitants worshiped in the church of Agios Nikolaos, Agios Georgios and in the two chapels of the Virgin Mary and Agios Dimitrios. The Metropolitan of Arta also states that at a distance of one hour from the village there was a spring with drinking water and temple ruins. The Metropolitan of Arta also mentions that in the village there was a school where a teacher taught and 15 students were studying geography, history, arithmetic and religion. The village was destroyed by the Turks during the Radovyzi revolution. [5]

The final liberation of Libra took place in 1881 and the Arachthos River was defined as the border of the Greek state.

Administrative changes

In 1883 the settlement of Livitsiko was included in the Municipality of Heraklion while in 1912 the settlement was annexed to the community of Ano Petra. [6] [7] In 1924 the settlement was detached from Ano Petra and joined the community of Markiniada, while in 1927 Livitsiko was renamed Zygos. [8] [9] In 1997 with the Government Gazette 244A-4/12/1997 the community was abolished and the settlement was included in the Municipality of Peta. The new administrative division provided for in the Kallikratis Plan resulted in Zygos joining the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas. [10]
