Orologio (Ωρολόγιο) Evoia

Orologio is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census it has 242 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 80 m. [1] on a hillside. The village is crossed by a torrent known as Orologiatis. The village's economy is agricultural and olives and fruit trees are grown in the area. [2]

Historical data

Mycenaean tombs have been discovered on the hill of the Analipsis. [3] It is possible that in ancient times there was a settlement there called Ex Ou. Remains of an ancient settlement are found at Korastida or Kerastida. There was a Byzantine settlement at Taxiarches. Today only the ruins and the temple of the Brigadiers survive. [2]

During the Turkish occupation it was called Platanos. The village took part in the revolt against the Ottomans in 1688, as did neighboring St. George, as they were in conflict with the local Turkish aga. After the revolution they tried to escape the retaliation of the Turks, but unsuccessfully, as the Turks burned the villages and killed the inhabitants. Those who survived rebuilt the village after a few years. [2]

In 1835 the Orologio was attached to the municipality of Dystia and in 1848 to the municipality of Avlonos. With the abolition of the municipalities in 1912, a community headquarters was established, which also included the villages of Agia Thekla and Prinaki. With the Kapodistrias plan it was annexed to the municipality of Avlonas and with the Kallikratis plan it was annexed to the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri. [2] [4]

Points of interest

The cemetery church of the village is dedicated to Agios Georgios. In the church there is a walled part of a Byzantine pseudo-sarcophagus of the 11th to 13th century. The sarcophagus is decorated with bows. Inside one arch are two peacocks in a fountain and in the other two men with a large vase. It may have been a wedding in Cana. [5] South of the village is the church of the Transfiguration, which celebrates on August 6. Fasting dishes such as fava beans and squid are served at the festival, unlike other villages where meat is cooked. [2] The Windmill location about 2 km south offers panoramic views. There is a water source at the Digestive site. [2]
