Ochyro (Οχυρό) Drama

Ochyro is a village with 514 inhabitants in 2011. It is located about 40 km northwest of Drama. It is a municipal district of the Municipality of Kato Nevrokopi. Lisse used to be called Lissa. In the village there is a Primary School and also a Folklore and Military Museum, which was founded on a private initiative and is maintained by the residents themselves.

Ochyro

Near the village is Fort Lisse, the only fort that did not fall to the Germans but was surrendered only when Thessaloniki ceased to be in Greek hands. [1]

Historical data
Fort Lisse.

Until 1922-23, Ochyro was inhabited by Turks and Bulgarians in two separate mahalades (neighborhoods). On the south side was the Turkish mahalas and on the north the Bulgarian one.

With the exchange of populations and the departure of the Turks and Bulgarians to the village, Greeks from Asia Minor and Thrace settled.

In the Bulgarian mahala of the Ochyro there was the church of Agios Dimitrios which until 1972 was the parish church of the village. That year, the new parish church of the Holy Trinity was erected near the main square. In the settlement are also the chapels of Agia Paraskevi, and Agioi Theodoroi, as well as the iconostasis of Agios Konstantinos at the entrance of the village.

Designation

It was named Ochyro in 1936 when the fortification works of the so-called Metaxa line began. The fort built on the hill adjacent to the village was named Lisse after the old name of the village and the village, Ochyro. In other words, names were exchanged.

Economy

The main occupation of the inhabitants until the 60's was the cultivation of tobacco. Corn, wheat, beans, chickpeas and potatoes were grown only to meet family needs. Almost all families also had a "box" for the production of their vegetables. Some were engaged in animal husbandry, keeping flocks of sheep and goats.

The difficult rural life forced many to emigrate internally to Thessaloniki and Athens to complete the desolation of the village in the 1960s with immigration to Germany.

Things have changed today. There are two main crops, potatoes and corn. Potatoes are channeled to the domestic market and corn becomes a food for milk production. The artificial lake of Lefkogia that was created irrigates the whole plain of Nevrokopi, has contributed significantly to the increase of agricultural production and consequently of livestock. In the village there are organized and non-livestock units that produce sheep's and cow's milk.
