  • Melissourgoi is a village in the prefecture of Arta, built at an altitude of 850-870 m on the slopes of Tzoumerka. It is the northernmost village of the prefecture and is 72 km from the city of Arta and 65 km from Ioannina. Its population according to the 2001 census was 671 inhabitants, while according to the 2011 census it is 419 inhabitants [2].

    Reference to the village with the name Melissourgoi has been made since 1272. It is said that the name of the village is due (in one sense) to the hard work of the inhabitants. Traces of ancient habitation of the area have been found at the site of Zileousti.

    Melissourgoi have a Byzantine tradition, since for many years they were Vassilochori, that is, the favorite village of Queen Anna Palaiologina Kantakouzinis (13th - 14th century), where - according to sources - she resorted to a departure, whenever she wanted to calm down or laugh. from enemies.

    Throughout the village there are many springs with beautiful mineral and table waters. Kefalovryso, Kryoneri, Vrotopi, Agathi are some of the springs of the village. The water "JUMERKA" is bottled from the water of the Agathi spring. The wild nature with the many waters and the spruce forests of Aetos, Kerasia, give the village a special natural beauty and grace and make it stand out from the rest of Tzoumerkochoria [6].

    Flora

    The slopes of Tzoumerka present a wide variety of native fir and pine forests as well as a wide variety of fruit-bearing, evergreen or deciduous trees: Acorns, arbutus, wild cherries, hazelnuts, blackberries, lindens, plane trees and raspberries. A variety of plants such as salepi, wild mint, tea, thrumbi, oregano, wild orchid, narcissus, red lily when they bloom fill the area with their aroma and color.

    Deer, wolves, wildcats, deer, bears and badgers, partridges, vultures, eagles and cross-eagles. coexist in the ecosystem of the area. [3]

    - Path that leads from the village to a waterfall, at an altitude. 1,500m about. The course lasts about 2 hours.

    - Path that leads from the village to the forest of Aetos.

    - Trail of about 5 hours, which connects the village with Theodoriana. The trail crosses fir forests, springs, meadows, abandoned fields and sheepfolds. It overlooks Tzoumerka and South Pindos. It passes through Avti, 1750m. altitude

    The local sports club of Melissourgoi is the Athletic Association of Beekeepers of Arta "the Bee", [8] known simply as the "Bee of Arta" and was founded in 1978. [9] It belongs to the power of E.P.S. Arta, [10] representing the area in local football.

    He has won 4 local championships (1990, 1994, 1996, 1998) [11] and 5 cups (1982, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996) [12] and has participated in the championship of the Fourth National Division, where he played in the 1990s. -91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1996-97, 1998-99 and 2002-03. [13]

    In the past, it also had a handball department, which was founded in 1984 and in 2003 suspended its operation, having played for a number of years in the Second National Championship. Also for 2 years, the club maintained a basketball department, operating completely as an amateur. [14]

    Until 2010, Melissourgoi were a separate community occupying a mountainous area at the northernmost point of the prefecture, on the slopes of Tzoumerka. The community occupied an area of ​​36.5 km2 and was bordered by the municipality of Agnantos and the prefectures of Trikala and Ioannina.
