Mavrochori (Μαυροχώρι) Kastoria

Mavrochori is a village in the municipality of Kastoria, in the Regional Unit of Kastoria. It is located on the east coast of Lake Orestiada opposite the city of Kastoria. It is united in terms of settlement with the northernmost Polycarp, with which it is separated by the river Xiropotamos.

At the point of the settlement, a large trade fair was moved, which used to take place either in the city of Kastoria, or in Diocletian, or further east in Kleisoura. The trade fair, which took place on September 25, in Mavrochori, started in the 9th century under the name "Dover Festival". The village has existed since 1380. At the end of the 15th century the village appears as "Mavrovo" with a population of 178 families (about 1,780 people). In the 18th century, the Mavrovo trade fair was one of the most important events in pre-revolutionary Greece. Its inhabitants were mainly Christians and secondarily Muslims, while a Greek and Ottoman school operated. Christians were bilingual (Greek / Slavic) and participated in the Macedonian Struggle. The main Montenegrin Macedonians were the chief Konstantinos Papastavrou, Chrysos Biboulas, Thomas Rantzos and Konstantinos Taravanis. After the Treaty of Lausanne, the Muslim inhabitants of the village fled to Turkey, while some families of Greek refugees also settled. [3] [4]

Today Mavrochori is a tourist destination for a quiet holiday on the lake of Kastoria. In addition to the trade fair, festive events take place on August 13-15 at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where the opposite monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa is celebrated (built by General Georgios Paleologos in memory of the victory against the Normans in 1083). The Mavrochori Naval Club also operates in the village. [6]
