History - Name
Ancient Makyneia

Makyneia or Makynia is mentioned as a city, first of western Lokrida and then of Aetolia, while it is probable that it existed during the Homeric period [1].

Modern times

Until 1980, Makyneia was referred to as Kato Mammako, when it was renamed FEK 79A-11/04/1980 [4]. At the foot of Paliokastro hill (200 m.), North of the current village above the tunnel of Ionia Odos where today there is the chapel of Agios Thomas, there was a settlement called Mammako or Mammakon. The settlement took its name from the nickname Mammakos and it has been mentioned since 1844. Its inhabitants moved further south to the current location of the village and founded Kato Mammako, which was first recognized as a settlement in 1940, while at the same time the settlement of Mamakon and Kato Mammako is recognized as the seat of the homonymous community [5] [1].
