Lyttos (Λυττός) Heraklion

Lyttos, formerly Xidas (residents 319 in 2001) is a village in the province of Pediada and the seat of the homonymous Municipal Department of the municipality of Minoa Pediada, in the Prefecture of Heraklion. Its location is on the south side of the hill where the ancient Lyttos was located, on the western curbs of the Lassithi mountains with panoramic views. The inhabitants are engaged in olive growing.

There is a Primary School in the settlement. Remarkable are the temples of the village, such as the three-aisled church of Agios Charalambos and Agios Titos and Agios Stylianos at the entrance of the village, in the courtyard of which capitals, inscriptions and other sculptures from ancient Lyttos have been collected. There is also a Youth Center in the same area. There are also many chapels such as Agios Georgios in the ruins of Lyttos and the Crucified, Agios Nikolaos and Agios Anargyros (it is open today), probably of the 13th century.

The Bouleuterion of ancient Lyttos

During the Minoan era, the city of Lyktos, or Lyttos, perhaps the oldest city in Crete, had a dominant presence in eastern Crete, in fact Lyktos took part with an army in the Trojan War. As can be seen from the excavation data and many inscriptions, Lyktos was also distinguished during the Roman period. More modern excavations at the Smari Acropolis, with findings from the Middle Minoan era onwards, confirm the important role of the area from ancient times.

The name Xidas, which he later received, is due to the first inhabitant of the village, who must have had the profession of manufacturer or seller of vinegar, such as molasses, wine, oil, etc. named Xidá.

During the 1841 revolution, a fierce battle took place in the settlement between the Greek revolutionaries and the Ottoman troops.
