Krines (Κρήνες) Korinthia

Krines is a village in the prefecture of Corinth with a population of 780, according to the 2011 census. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Velos-Vocha. It is 17 km from Corinth and 95 from Athens. The economy of the village is mainly based on the agricultural production of citrus, apricot, sultanas and oil. The Olympic judo champion in Atlanta, Haris Papaioannou, is also from Crete. His father, Athanasios Papaioannou, has a long tenure in the community.

History

The village of Krines seems to have a history of centuries, as the oldest information about its existence is lost during the years of Ottoman rule. At the time, his name was "Ibrahimbei" or "Brabi", apparently from the name of the Turkish official under whose command, Ibrahim Bey. However, there are indications that the area has been inhabited since ancient times, since it is a short distance from Ancient Sikyona and between the most important cities of Ancient Sikyon and Ancient Corinth. The wider residential area to which the present-day village geographically belonged was probably called Epikeia and was a suburb of Ancient Sikyon. The road that connected these two cities crosses the village even today (Public).

It is also important to mention that during the Byzantine times the area must have been inhabited, while it seems that in the southern part of the village there was a place where clay pots, ceramic vessels and related objects were made, since even today one can dig in a small depth of earth. to discover pottery remains. Very close to the borders of the village, in Tarsina, the Byzantine church of the Transfiguration of the Savior of the 14th century is preserved, of significant historical and archaeological value, which reinforces the view that the area was inhabited in those years. From information passed down from generation to generation, it seems that during the liberation struggle of 1821, the villagers actively participated, culminating in the battle in the northern part of the village, on the Public Section of the weakened army of Dramalis, after the destruction he suffered in the Battle of Dervenaki.

The current name of the village was given in 1917, at the suggestion of the then teacher of the Elementary School Papadopoulos Ioannis, who was inspired by the fountains (Krines = fountains) that gushed abundant water in the central square, under the centuries-old plane tree - trademark - trademark of the village. However, even today, the older ones are used to using the older name.
