Kokkoras (Κοκκοράς) Arkadia

Kokkoras is located in the Municipality of Gortynia (former Municipality of Irea), in the Municipal Unit of Irea of ​​the Prefecture of Arcadia. Together with the settlement of Bardaki (formerly also known as "Bardatsi") it constitutes the Municipal District of Kokkoras of the Municipal Unit of Iraia. At the top of the hill of the village dominates the Holy Temple of the Prophet Elias, which dates from the late 1800s. The houses of the village are stone, built in the traditional Gortynian style. The stone building of the school and its beautifully designed space in combination with the beautiful view of this point also stand out. The village has a lot of running water and a lot of vegetation in its territory as it is an excellent choice for nature walks.


Historical data

On the outskirts of the village, according to historians, are ruins from the Byzantine period, while it is speculated that in the same area was probably the ancient city of Melaines that flourished simultaneously with Heraia and then finally disappeared.

Konstantinos Tsakalis was born in Kokkoras, who according to Fotakos, biographer of Theodoros Kolokotronis, was one of the leaders of the bodyguard of the Elder of Moria and fought alongside him in all the battles for the liberation of Greece.

Demographics

Kokkoras used to be a big village with many families and prosperous population. According to the 2011 census, the settlement had 62 permanent residents, while according to the 2001 census, the village had 102 permanent residents. The few inhabitants of the village are mainly engaged in agriculture but also in animal husbandry to a lesser extent.

Geographical data

The settlement is connected by road with a road of 3.5 km with Agalos, with a road of 2 km with Kakouraika, with a road of 4 km with Bardaki and with a road of 5.5 km with the lower Rizospilia. The village is 25 km from Dimitsana, 30 km from Lagkadia and 75 km from Tripoli.
