Geography - History

Kefalari is located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Vitsi (Verno) and north of Lake Kastoria. It is 7.5 km north of Kastoria and to the east of the village passes the provincial road Kastoria - Florina. The old name is Semota [2] and until its liberation the population was mixed (Muslims and Slavic-speaking Christians). Schinas refers to 1886 as "a village with 150 Christians and 250 Ottomans." In 1918, it is mentioned with the same name in the Government Gazette 259A - 29/12/1918 that the seat of the homonymous community that then belonged to the prefecture of Florina is defined. In 1926 with the Official Gazette 413A - 22/11/1926 it was renamed Kefalari [3]. As a result of the Treaty of Lausanne and the Greek-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923, refugees (25 families of 104 people) from Kyziko Propontis and Pontos (Kyrishane Trapezountas) settled in the village. [4] [5] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Kastoria, Chloi and Aposkepos, they constitute the municipal community of Kastoria which belongs to the municipal unit of Kastoria of the municipality of Kastoria and its population, according to the 2011 census, amounts to 353 permanent residents. .
