Kato Vatheia (Κάτω Βάθεια ) Heraklion

Kato Vatheia is a village in the province of Pediada and the seat of the homonymous Municipal Department of the Municipality of Gouves, in the Prefecture of Heraklion. It is located about 15 kilometers from the city of Heraklion. It is located in the valley of the Vatheianos river. About 60 residents (approx. 2001) are engaged in olive growing and viticulture. Attractions worth mentioning are the Poropharangos gorge.

The Municipal District of Kato Vatheia consists of three settlements and has a total of 875 inhabitants, based on the 2001 census.

The first known mention of Lower Vatheias is in 1271. It is referred to as Cato Vathie. In a contract of 1279, monosyllabic KatoVatheia is mentioned.

In 1881 it joined the municipality of Episkopi with 210 inhabitants as well as in 1900, with 141 inhabitants. In 1928 it became part of the community of Elia, with 215 inhabitants. From 1940 onwards it became a separate community. With the Kapodistrias plan, Kato Vatheia joined the Municipality of Gouves.

In the area of ​​the village, in the place of Artsa, a carved tomb was discovered, dating from the Late Minoan period. Two shrines were found with the skeletons in the original position of the deceased, and it was certified that the dead were then placed in the sarcophagi with their limbs folded.

Also in 1958, excavations were carried out in an archaic Greek tomb, from the beginning of the 7th century BC. The burial was done in a jar, which had a neck decorated with three sphinxes, with nicely decorated heads and a labyrinthine headdress [1].

In 1583 it is mentioned (Kastrofylakas, K 95) under the name Vatheia Cato. In recent years, residents of Kato Vatheia, along with others, founded the settlement of Kokkini Hani.

In the cemetery of the village is the old church of Agia Aikaterini, while the Transfiguration of the Savior and the newer church Zoodochos Pigi are remarkable.
