Kato Mamoulada, Aitoloakarnania

Kato Mamoulada is a lowland settlement in Nafpaktia in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 120 meters [1]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Mamoulada they constitute the Local Community of Mamoulada which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nafpaktos of the Municipality of Nafpaktia and according to the 2011 census has a population of 621 inhabitants [2].

Geography - Sights

Kato Mamoulada is located on the western slopes of Mount Rigani, between the foothills of Pouliani and Diaseli hills. The village is very close to the national road Antirriou - Iteas, but on the provincial road Thermou - Nafpaktos. It is NW. 4.5 km. [4] from Nafpaktos, which is now an extension. An ancient settlement has been found in the area of ​​Pouliani hill, which is being excavated. Sights of the village are considered the parish church of Agios Polykarpos, which was first built in 1900 and replaced by a new stone one in 1970 as well as the Prophet Elias at the top of Mount Rigani (1,472 m.) [3] [5].

History - Name

Kato Mamoulada was created by the livestock inhabitants of Mamoulada (also called Ano Mamoulada) who spent the winter with their animals in the area "Ginani". Its name is probably derived from the nickname Mamoulas, Mamoulias - Mamoulis [3]. It was recognized as a settlement in 1940 and annexed to the then community of Mamoulada, while according to the plan of Kapodistrias, in 1997, together with Mamoulada, it belonged to the then Municipality of Nafpaktos.
