Alepochori (Αλεποχώρι) Achaia

Alpochori or Alepochori [1] is a traditional settlement [2] of Achaia, which is built at the foot of two steep mountains at an altitude of 530 meters [3].

History

The name of the village comes from the mythical king Alpi (or Alpa) [4] or from the mythical giant Giant Alpo [5]. On 16/10/1940 the old name of the village Alpochori is corrected to Alepochorion [6].

In 1700 it is mentioned in the Venetian census "Grimani" as Alupocon Trano and has a population of 27 families (113 inhabitants) [4] [5].

In 1816 it is reported that he had 15 families. It has been a parish since 1832 [5]. The historical Tsalamida family comes from Alpochori with an offer in the struggle of 1821 and in politics until today. The fighters of 1821 Andrikopoulos also came from Alpochori.

The settlement was three hours drive in 1885 from Prostovitsa, then the seat of the Municipality of Tritaia [7]. In 1903, Christos Koryllos states that the village was four hours away from Prostovitsa and that it had a school (secretariat).

Administrative development

From 1836 to 1841 it was a municipal district of the then Municipality of Erymanthia and from 1841 to 1912 a municipal district of the then Municipality of Tritaia. In 1912 it became an independent community until 1997, when according to the Kapodistrias law, the Municipality of Tritaia was re-established and became its municipal district again. Since 2010 it belongs to the Municipality of Erymanthos [6].

Settlement Agios Dimitrios Achaia

The settlement of Agios Dimitrios also belongs to Alpochori [16]. According to local testimonies, it was created by residents of Alepochori who settled in a more open place that had fields [4]. It was officially recognized as a settlement in 1928 with 270 inhabitants [4], in 1925 it became a parish and in the same year it acquired a primary school that continues to operate to this day. Since 1928 it has been a settlement of the community of Alepochori and today of the Municipality of Erymanthos [17]. In the 2011 census it had 137 inhabitants [12].
