General elements

Agios Vasileios is built at an altitude of 310 meters, 23 km from the capital of the prefecture, Rethymno [2]. The name seems to have come from the homonymous church of the village.

Reference to the settlement is already made from a Venetian census of 1583, which recorded 136 inhabitants [3]. During the Turkish occupation, the village was called "New Agios Vasileios". According to an inventory of the Ottoman authorities of 1650, it was the capital of the homonymous nahiyye and had an area of 19 houses, being at the same time a hassle of the Cretan Empire [4]. In 1670 out of the 23 landowners, nine were Muslims [3] while the village was now owned by the santzakipei of Rethymno [5]. According to the Ottoman census of 1881, St. Basil had a population of 84 inhabitants, 9 of whom were Muslims. In 1894, according to the estimate of the officer of the Greek army, Nikostratos Kalomenopoulos, 20 Greek families lived in the village [7]. In 1900, according to the official Cretan State census, there were 116 inhabitants in the village.

The gorge of Kakoperatos starts at the borders of the settlement [9]. According to one version, near the settlement there used to be a Byzantine fortress called Kato Syvritos, the location of which has not been determined.

Administratively, Agios Vasileios was from 1913 to 1997 a community of the municipality of Agios Vasileios, while from 1997 until 2011 it was part of the Kapodistrian municipality of Foinikas [10]. Based on the current administrative division of the "Kallikratis" plan, the settlement is included within the boundaries of the municipality of Agios Vasileios.
