Tomas Povedano de Arcos (Lucena, province of Córdoba, September 22, 1847 - February 29, 1943, San Jose) was a Spanish painter, who emigrated to America and ended up establishing himself in Costa Rica.

Biography

He studied painting in Malaga and Seville, where he worked as an illustrator while he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts and taught private drawing lessons. His artistic career began by decorating fans, which will be revealed later in a series of paintings of flowers and allegorical themes.3

It collaborated with the movement that tried to establish the First Spanish Republic writing in some means like the Flagbearer and the Baluarte; Was a volunteer militiaman and delegate representative of the Provincial Committee before the Municipal Committee of the Republican Coalition. He was Mason (he was even Venerable Master of the Respectable Lodge Hermes N. 7) and Theosophist.

In 1889-1891 participated in the scientific, literary and artistic contests of Seville and in 1889 obtained gold medal in the Universal Exhibition of Paris by a full-length portrait. This triumph contributes to win the contest opened by the Legation of Ecuador to create a high school of plastic arts in Cuenca.

He arrived in that South American country in 1892 and founded the Academy of Fine Arts in Cuenca and Guayaquil. During his time in Ecuador he had important portraits.
