For Only One Short Hour

Anna Blunden (22 December 1829 - 1915) was an English artist, a member of John Ruskin's circle.

Biography

Anna Blunden was born on December 22, 1829 in Saint John's Square, London. She was a trained governess in Babbacombe, Devon before leaving this career to study art in London. She took classes at Leigh's Academy and also studied independently in British Museum and National Gallery. In 1859, she and 37 other women petitioned for women's entry to the Royal Academy. She also traveled to Switzerland and Germany, and set up a studio in Rome before returning home after her sister's death in 1872. Soon after, she married her brother-in-law Francis Richard Martino.[1] She raised three children and died in 1915.

Not many of her works remain. From her exhibition record and the works that have been maintained, it is known that she started her career in the 1850s as a figure painter. Her paintings also demonstrated a desire to depict modern subjects. Two early pieces that exemplify this are The Seamstress (1843) and A Scene from Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853). The subject of The Seamstress is overworked needle women who labor in tiny rooms to produce finely sewn clothes for the upper and middle class. The painting explored the topic of exploitative conditions of women in clothing trades and factories. Other works by Blunden includePast and Present (exhibited in the Royal Academy 1858) and A Mother's tale (exhibited in Society of British Artists 1855).[2][3]
